UPDATE – Borsa Istanbul down at Thursday’s close

Turkey’s benchmark stock index closed on Thursday at 1,449.82 points, down by 0.67% from the previous close.

Starting the day at 1,450.52 points, Borsa Istanbul’s BIST 100 index lost 9.75 points over Tuesday’s close of 1,459.57 points.

On Wednesday, the stock market remained closed as Turkey marked the Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day on May 19.

During the day, the index’s value hovered between 1,439.36 points and 1,454.81 points – 42 stocks on the index rose, 50 fell, and eight remained flat compared to Monday.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 1 trillion Turkish liras ($123 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 17.7 billion Turkish liras ($2.1 billion).

The highest trading volumes were posted by private lender Garanti BBVA, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines and iron and steel producer Kardemir.

Shares of prominent sports club Fenerbahce (FENER) performed the best, rising 9.99%, while stocks of iron/steel producer Eregli Demir Celik (EREGL) suffered the worst, falling 4.03%.

According to data from Borsa Istanbul’s Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold was traded for $1,855.50 by market close, falling from $1,869.50 at the previous close.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $66.08 per barrel as of 6.00 p.m. local time (1500GMT).
