UPDATE – US police: Multiple casualties in California shooting; suspect down

A shooting near a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail maintenance yard in San Jose, California resulted in multiple casualties early Wednesday.

Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Russell Davis told reporters “there are multiple injuries and multiple fatalities in this case,” and there is an ongoing investigation.

“And the suspect is confirmed deceased. I will not go into details … but the suspect is deceased at this point. So the public safety is saved at this point,” said Davis.

Mayor Sam Liccardo offered condolences to the families of those who were killed. “Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting,” he said.

“In the @VTA family, we mourn our lost coworkers and pray for the recovery of those being treated,” Liccardo said in a series of tweets.

KTVU, an Oakland Fox television channel affiliate, interviewed the son of a VTA employee who said the shooting occurred during a union meeting.
