Taiwan’s Regional Leader Advocates for Increased Defense Spending Amid Regional Tensions

TAIPEI: Taiwan's regional leader, William Lai Ching-te, emphasized the need for Taiwan to enhance its defense budget to fortify its capabilities and affirm its commitment to security. In his 2025 New Year's address, Lai articulated the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for global security and prosperity.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lai underscored the necessity for Taiwan to prepare for potential threats even during peaceful times. He stated, "We must continue to increase our national defense budget, strengthen our national defense capabilities, and demonstrate our determination to protect our country." Lai also emphasized the collective responsibility of safeguarding Taiwan's democratic and security interests.

Lai called for a comprehensive approach to strengthening defense, highlighting the importance of societal resilience and preparedness for major disasters. He advocated for bolstering communication to counter information and cognitive warfare, aiming to ensure the populace remains vigilant against external threats and enticements.

His remarks follow a statement from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who reiterated China's stance on reunification with Taiwan. Xi emphasized the familial bonds between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and asserted that these ties cannot be severed. The issue continues to be a significant point of contention, particularly as Donald Trump is set to assume the U.S. presidency on January 20.

China views Taiwan as a 'breakaway province,' while Taiwan has considered itself independent since 1949. The discourse around Taiwan's sovereignty remains a critical geopolitical flashpoint.
