Employment in the broader public sector increased by 894 persons or 1.2% in the second quarter of 2023, compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022 and by 0.8% compared to the first quarter of 2023. According to data released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, on an annual basis, employment in the Central Government increased by 629 persons (1.0%), in Local Authorities by 99 persons (2.2%), and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 166 persons (2.9%). Employment in Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) shows a significant increase of 22.4%, which is attributed to the transfer of Hourly Paid Workers from the Ministry of Health (Government) to the State Health Services Organisation (NPO), as from January 2023. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, employment in the Public Sector increased by 596 persons (0.8%). An increase in employment was observed in the Central Government by 380 persons (0.6%) and in Local Authorities by 218 individuals (5.1%), while employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies remained stable. The total number of employees in the Public Sector in the second quarter of 2023 was 73,326. In the General Government, employment reached 67,515 persons, and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies, it amounted to 5,811 persons. In the General Government, which consists of the Government, Non-Profit Organisations, and Local Authorities, employment reached 52,373, 10,625, and 4,517 persons, respectively.
