The 3rd Mediterranean Beach Games opened in Heraklion

The 3rd Mediterranean Beach Games 'Heraklion 2023' begun on Saturday evening with an opening ceremony, featuring Cretan symbols and mythological figures. The opening ceremony took place at the Karteros Beach Sports Center and started at 20:30. The Games will be hosted at Heraklion of Crete from September 9 until September 16, 2023. The ceremony kicked off with the Heraklion Philharmonic Orchestra entering the site, while palying the Greek national anthem. The delegations of the 26 countries taking part in the Games followed, in a parade at the Karteros Beach Sports Center. The flag of Greece entered first, followed by the rest of the countries in alphabetical order. The Cypriot delegation of the Cyprus Olympic Committee entered the Sports Center with Denis Taradin of Kiteboarding and Rena Tsangari of Beach Handball holding the Cypriot flag. This was followed by the ritual of the ceremony, was designed by the Heraklion choreographer and director Stavros Litinas and had as its central theme the sevenfold labyrinth, which is found on most areas of the Mediterranean and is known as the "Cretan Labyrinth". As regards the first Day of the Games, the Cypriot Beach Handball Team of Men was defeated by Croatia with 2-0 sets. On Saturday morning, the Women Beach Handball team lost by the team of Italy with 7-4 in the shout outs. In the afternoon, the Beach Handball Women team of Cyprus achieved a great victory over Tunisia with 7-6 in the shoot outs. Early in the afternoon, the Cypriot triathlete of the Modern Pentathlon, secured in the Final of his sport the 13th place out of 16 participants.
