Turkish Tourism Revenues Jump 23% in Second Quarter of 2023

Turkiye’s tourism sector has enjoyed a notable resurgence, as the number of arrivals in the first six months of 2023 increased by an impressive 17 percent, surpassing the 22 million mark. And the rising trend looks set to continue after the sector was severely impacted by the pandemic restrictions. According to reports, Turkiye’s tourism income alone for the first half of this year stands at almost 22 billion dollars. Tourism makes up about 10 percent of Turkiye’s GDP, and last year contributed to 5 percent of the country’s total employment. And it’s also had a positive impact on the economy. Turkiye has now posted a current account surplus for the first time since 2021 to add to its foreign reserves. The Turkish lira’s fall against the dollar has also attracted travellers, but some officials warn increasing prices may push tourists to spend less. Turkiye aims to host about 60 million foreign tourists and targets 56 billion dollars in tourism revenue by the end of this year. Are these figures viable?
