Cyprus' High Commissioner in the UK, Kyriakos Kouros, has pointed out that the current illegal status quo in Cyprus, due to the Turkish occupation, "cannot be the solution to the Cyprus issue and is not the future we envision for our homeland, for Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, Latins and all the legal residents of our island". In his message for the Orthodox Easter, Kouros noted that "we cannot compromise with the occupation. The efforts of the President of the Republic and our Government continue, so that we will be able to break the deadlock and resume negotiations from the point where they were suspended, always on the basis of the agreed solution" as well as of the convergences achieved during the previous years of negotiations for a bi-zonal bi-communal federation, he added. Moreover, he noted that the appointment of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Cyprus, following persistent efforts by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has sent an "impo rtant message". Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
