Cyprus to host Ministerial Meeting on Migration on May 17

Cyprus will host a Ministerial Meeting on Migration, and more specifically its external dimension, with emphasis on flows from Syria. The Summit will take place on May 17 at the initiative of its Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou. The Interior Ministry's spokesperson, Margarita Kyriakou, told CNA that this is an initiative of the Republic of Cyprus following the Interior Minister's recent bilateral contacts in Denmark, the Czech Republic and Greece. According to Kyriakou, countries that have already expressed support to Cyprus' position regarding the need to reassess the situation in Syria as far as migration is concerned have been invited to the meeting. She noted that participants will discuss about the external dimension of Migration, with an emphasis on the issue of Syria. Also, aspects and planning of a joint mission on the ground in Syria to collect information and further explore the possibility of offering Syrians the option of voluntary return to their country given that Syrians cannot be dep orted will be discussed. This is something that has already been agreed between Cyprus and the Czech Republic during the recent visit of the Minister of the Interior to the Czech Republic. Participants in the meeting will also look into the possibility of other countries joining this mission. According to Kyriakou, the meeting is part of a wider spectrum of initiatives of the Republic of Cyprus aiming at the limitation and management of migration flows, that also includes the joint visit of President of the Republic, Nikos Chrsitodoulides and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen to Lebanon on Thursday.
