UNSG’s Personal Envoy returns to Cyprus on Tuesday for meetings

UNSG's Personal Envoy for Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuellar is arriving on the island on Tuesday evening and is set to meet separately with the two leaders, namely Cyprus President. Nikos Christodoulides. and Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, Wednesday morning. The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned that during her visit Holguín will also continue her meetings with civil society representatives and with business people, throughout the island. On Tuesday afternoon, Holguin had a meeting in Brussels with the EU High Representative Josep Borrell. She also had meetings with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, and the head of the Commission's Directorate-General for Reforms (DG REFORM), Mario Nava. Guterres' Personal Envoy had contacts in Berlin, Paris, Athens, London and Ankara the previous weeks. President Christodoulides said on Tuesday that the coming week is crucial for the Cyprus problem as Holguínreturns having had cons ultations with various players, and expressed hope that there will be such developments "that will allow us to be optimistic about the resumption of the talks". Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
