102-Year-Old Japanese Man Becomes Oldest Person to Climb Mount Fuji

Tokyo: A 102-year-old Japanese man became the oldest person to climb Mount Fuji, according to the Guinness World Records. Kokichi Akuzawa reached the peak of Mount Fuji on August 3, Japan's tallest peak at 3,776 meters (12,388 feet), after recovering from heart failure.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kokichi Akuzawa, who reached the summit of Mount Fuji, has a routine of climbing mountains almost weekly. This recent accomplishment is not the first time Kokichi has climbed Japan's highest mountain at an advanced age. He previously summited it at the age of 96. Kokichi remarked that this climb felt "a lot different from the last time."

The centenarian climber took three days to reach the peak, a departure from his previous one-day climbs, allowing himself two nights in mountain huts en route to the summit. When asked if he would attempt the climb again, Kokichi humorously replied, "Never again," but added, "If you ask me next year, maybe you'll get a different answer, but for now, I'm happy with that climb."

Kokichi Akuzawa, known for his passion for mountaineering, celebrated his 99th birthday by climbing to the Nabewariyama mountain's 1,272-meter (4,173-foot) summit.
