Srinagar: Atiqa Mir, an 11-year-old karting sensation born in Srinagar and raised in Dubai, is making significant strides toward her dream of becoming the first Indian woman to compete in Formula One. While her peers are engaged in typical childhood activities, Mir is fiercely competing on Europe's demanding karting circuits, vying against older and more experienced racers.
According to Anadolu Agency, Mir's journey in motorsport began at a young age, inspired by her father, Asif Nazir Mir, a former Indian national karting champion. Her early exposure to the thrilling world of racing fueled her passion for the sport. Starting with recreational electric karts, Mir quickly transitioned to competitive racing in the United Arab Emirates, where she demonstrated remarkable skill and speed.
By the age of nine, Mir had already made a name for herself by finishing as the runner-up in the UAE IAME National Karting Championship's Mini R category. Her trajectory continued upward as she became the first Kashmiri female driver to qualify for the Rotax Euro Trophy finals in 2024. The same year, she made history by winning a race at the Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy in France, becoming the first female racer to achieve this feat.
Mir's exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed on the international stage. In 2024, she was the only Asian driver selected for the Iron Dames Young Talent Programme. The following year, she joined the F1 Academy's Discover Your Drive initiative, marking a significant milestone as the first Indian and Asian female racer to be chosen for the program.
Currently competing across Europe, Mir has advanced to the OKN-J junior category, facing competitors several years her senior. Despite the age gap, she continues to excel, becoming the first Indian driver to podium in the European leg of the Champions of the Future Academy karting series. Her triumph in Thessaloniki, Greece, where she swept the qualifying, heat races, and final, further cemented her status as a rising star in motorsport.
Mir emphasizes the importance of intelligence over aggression on the track, a mindset that has brought her success and an invitation to join the world championship-winning Modena Racing Team for the 2026 WSK season. As she progresses through the motorsport ranks, Mir remains acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead, particularly the financial demands of advancing to Formula One.
The road to Formula One is notoriously difficult, especially for women. No female driver has participated in a Formula One Grand Prix since 1992, a barrier that Mir is determined to break.
