Jerusalem:The foreign ministers of Turkey and 18 other countries have expressed strong condemnation of Colombia's recent inauguration of its embassy in Jerusalem.
According to Anadolu Agency, a joint statement was released by Turkey's Foreign Ministry, in which the ministers declared their 'unequivocal rejection' of Colombia's decision. They argued that this move violates relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and undermines efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace through a two-state solution.
The statement was issued by the foreign ministers of Turkey, Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. They emphasized that any attempt to alter the legal or historical status of occupied Jerusalem or to recognize it as Israel's capital is 'null and void and has no legal effect.'
The ministers referred to UN Security Council Resolutions 476 and 478, both adopted in 1980, which reject changes to Jerusalem's character or status and call on states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city. They described Jerusalem as part of the Palestinian territory occupied in 1967.
Furthermore, the ministers called on the Colombian government to reconsider and reverse its decision, to adhere to international law, and to avoid actions that would compromise the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. They also reiterated their support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
