Ankara: At least 190 people were rescued after an observation wheel 'malfunctioned' in Hong Kong on Thursday, officials said. According to Anadolu Agency, the incident occurred at the Ferris wheel in the Central Harbourfront area of the semi-autonomous region of China at around 5 p.m. (0900GMT), as reported by an official RTHK broadcaster. A spokeswoman for the wheel mentioned over the phone that all individuals have been safely rescued and the area has been cleared of any danger. The spokeswoman further stated, "Now, there is no one in the area. All are safe," while adding that the reason behind the wheel's malfunction remains unknown. Emergency response teams, including fire trucks, were promptly dispatched to the scene to carry out the rescue mission. The Hong Kong Observation Wheel, often referred to as the Big Wheel, Giant Wheel, or Observation Wheel, is an amusement ride featuring a rotating upright wheel with multiple passenger-carrying cabins. This particular Ferris wheel stands 60 meters tall and is located at the Central Harbourfront. Equipped with 42 gondolas, the Hong Kong Observation Wheel includes one VIP gondola that offers leather seats and a clear glass bottom floor for a unique viewing experience. All gondolas come with air conditioners and communication systems to ensure passenger comfort and safety.
