Mexico city: The 2026 FIFA World Cup, an unprecedented event hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, is set to commence on Thursday. This edition will mark the first time the tournament is held across three countries, featuring an expanded lineup of 48 teams.

According to Anadolu Agency, the opening match will take place on June 11 at the historic Mexico City Stadium, where Mexico will face South Africa. The tournament will wrap up on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, after six weeks of competition. In total, 104 matches will be held in 16 stadiums spanning four time zones, with the US hosting a substantial 78 matches.

This year's World Cup also sees a significant increase in African and Arab representation. Ten African countries and eight Arab countries will compete, with Morocco being the sole nation to represent both regions. The tournament will witness the participation of 1,248 players from 48 countries, including 357 players returning from previous World Cups and 891 newcomers.

A notable feature of the 2026 World Cup is its expansion to 48 teams, allowing countries like Cape Verde, Cura§ao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan to compete for the first time. Additionally, the US, as one of the host nations, will face Trkiye, Paraguay, and Australia in the Group D stage.

Despite the excitement surrounding the tournament, challenges such as high ticket prices, accommodation costs, and extensive travel requirements pose difficulties for fans. FIFA's decision to host the event across three North American countries necessitates significant travel for attendees.

The Mexico City Stadium is set to make history as it hosts its third World Cup opening match. Previously, it hosted the opening matches of the 1970 and 1986 World Cups, becoming a venue of historic significance, where legendary moments from Pele and Maradona unfolded.
