Ankara: A strong 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the region of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The earthquake impacted the area near the coastal city of Madang, which serves as the capital of the Madang province, at 0618GMT.
According to Anadolu Agency, the quake’s epicenter was initially determined to be located at 5.34 degrees south latitude and 145.75 degrees east longitude, with a depth recorded at 10 kilometers (6 miles). The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 78 kilometers (48 miles) beneath the earth’s surface.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency noted a slightly higher magnitude, listing the quake at 6.1. As of now, there have been no immediate reports concerning casualties or damage to infrastructure.
