Antalya: The 60th Presidential Cycling Tour of Trkiye, a major global sporting event, is set to crown a champion after eight stages in as many days, while spotlighting the rich cultural and natural treasures of Trkiye. The event will kick off in Antalya on April 27 and will pass through notable destinations including Kemer, Kalkan, Fethiye, Marmaris, Akyaka, Aydin, Kusadasi, Selcuk, and Cesme before concluding in Izmir on May 4.

According to Anadolu Agency, the race, which takes place in key tourism destinations such as Antalya, Aydin, and Izmir, will be broadcast live on Eurosport and TRT Spor. Emin Muftuoglu, head of the Turkish Cycling Federation, emphasized the global significance of the tour, noting its evolution from the Marmara Tour in 1963 to gaining international status in 1965 and becoming a presidential event in 1966.

Muftuoglu highlighted that the tour, part of the International Cycling Union (UCI) European Tour calendar and Trkiye's only "ProSeries" category race, will feature world-renowned professional teams and athletes. This year, 23 teams will compete, with Trkiye being represented by Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyespor, Konya Buyuksehir Belediyespor, and Spor Toto teams.

The Federation head also noted the tour's role in promoting cycling culture in Trkiye, reflected in the increase in bicycle sales and the frequency of race organizations. He mentioned the importance of broadcasting the event on television, which has significantly contributed to the development of cycling in the country.

Muftuoglu underscored the strategic timing of the event before the start of the tourism season, aiming to enhance Trkiye's tourism share and recognition. The promotion through the cycling tour is seen as crucial for attracting tourists at the beginning of the season.

He also pointed out the significance of Izmir as the final stop of the race, given its historical importance in the War of Independence. Unlike previous years where the race concluded in Istanbul or Antalya, this year's event will end in Izmir following three stages in the city. The final stages will include challenging climbs in Sirince and Meryem Ana before heading to Cesme and finishing in Karsiyaka.

Last year's race began in Antalya with 25 teams and 175 athletes and concluded in Istanbul, with Frank van den Broek of the Dsm-Firmenich PostNL team taking the crown.
