Hanoi: Eight people were confirmed dead while five are missing in northern Vietnam after Typhoon Matmo triggered floods and landslides, according to media reports.

According to Anadolu Agency, three people were killed in a landslide, four in flash floods, and one in a lightning strike, as reported by The People's Army Newspaper. This newspaper operates under the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Ministry of National Defense.

The report detailed that 15,762 houses were flooded, while 402 houses sustained damage. Flooding has affected 33 communes and 5,455 households in Thai Nguyen, and three communes and 1,034 households in Lang Son.

Nearly 15,000 hectares of rice and crops have been flooded and damaged. In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has allocated 140 billion VND ($5.3 million) from the 2025 central budget contingency fund to assist the four affected northern provinces.
