At least eight people in central Afghanistan were killed when a powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region on Friday, shaking different parts of Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan. The eight fatalities occurred in the Bagrami district of central Kabul province, with one person also reported injured.
According to Anadolu Agency, one person had been reported missing earlier, as stated by the Afghanistan Information Ministry. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 181 kilometers (112 miles) at 1612GMT, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. Initially measured at a magnitude of 5.9, the quake was later downgraded to 5.8.
The tremor was felt in the Afghan capital of Kabul, as noted by a local, Obaidullah Baheer, on the US social media platform X. In Pakistan, the quake was felt in the capital Islamabad, the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region. Additionally, trem ors were experienced in Indian-administered Kashmir. The Pakistan Meteorological Department initially measured the quake at a magnitude of 6.1.
