An 82-year-old woman stabbed her sick husband to death and then attempted to take her own life with the same knife but did not succeed, in the town of Mercatale di Vernio near Prato, investigative sources said Monday. The murder and attempted suicide took place on Sunday evening, according to Carabinieri police. The man, who was also 82, had Alzheimer's disease. The woman is currently being treated at the local Santo Stefano Hospital for a stab wound to the neck. She is under close surveillance after psychiatric evaluation, medical sources said. Carabinieri police probing the murder said the motive is still unclear but the woman was believed to be exasperated by her husband's deteriorating condition and lack of medical assistance.
