Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Ioannou will participate in the deliberations of the EU Council of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers to be held on Thursday and Friday in Luxembourg under the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU. According to an official press release, the Ministers are expected to discuss the two legislations of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum. They will express their views on the criteria and procedures for examining applications for international protection and on the solidarity framework between member states and burden sharing. Ioannou will emphasize the need of solidarity, especially towards the frontline member states, which are called upon to manage and cope with the increased immigration pressures. The press release says that negotiations on the legislations are at an important stage, since the Swedish Presidency is making an effort to reach an agreement on the specific proposals at Council level, with the aim of managing migration flows more effectively. Further topics on the agenda will be, among others, the external dimension of migration, including the situation in Tunisia, while Ministers will also discuss the current situation in Ukraine and the impact of Russia's invasion.
