Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday that Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, will meet with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in order to convey some messages to him. The President also noted that he has written to Guterres.
In statements to the press following a memorial service and replying to a question the President of the Republic said that the European Council conclusions are there whether some are convinced or not as to his will and positions for a solution.
He said that his will is also recorded in the conclusions of the recent European People's Party summit and in statements by the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz.
The President also said that "we are in contact with the UNSG who acknowledges our readiness for the resumption of the talks," adding that in a very few days there will be a private meeting with the Secretary-General "to see how we coordinate as Cyprus Republic, in continuation of the contacts Guterres himself had with the EU, with the aim of resuming the peace talks."
The President said that criticism is welcome but went on to add that in this particular case he cannot understand what is the purposes it serves.
Replying to a question he said that the meeting with UNSG will take place at the level of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and it is already set. He called on everyone to be patient as announcements will be made on the date and the subject. He said that messages will be conveyed in this meeting, adding that he wrote himself to the UNSG but 'we simply do not advertise the actions we are taking'.
Christodoulides added that they are interested mostly not to advertise actions for communication purposes but how to break the impasse and resume the talks.
He said that he had a phone conversation with the SG and wrote to him and at the same time the Foreign Minister will convey a specific message.
The President noted once again that 'a lot is happening'.
He said that their efforts are focused on how to break the deadlock.
In another question if he had been informed in relation to a NATO exercise in which Cyprus Republic was registered based on coordinates and not with its name, the President said that so far he has not had any information on this specific issue, but certainly this week he will.
Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasions. Numerous rounds of talks to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results. The latest round under the UN aegis took place in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans Montana.
