CoE SG expresses support to UN SG’s efforts to resume Cyprus talks

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, expressed her support for the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations to resume negotiations, with the aim of solving the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions, during a meeting she had on Monday with President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, as part of her official visit to Cyprus. As a press release issued by the Parliament says, during the meeting, Demetriou thanked Buric for the principled position of the Council of Europe regarding the Cyprus problem and the efforts to solve it. These positions, Demetriou pointed out, are reflected in the important Resolution on the need to return Famagusta to its legal residents, recently adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. it adds that Buric expressed her support for the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations for the resumption of negotiations, with the aim of solving the Cyprus problem on the basis of the bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions. She also praised the high degree of compliance of Cyprus with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, it notes. On her part, Demetriou underlined the adherence of the House of Representatives to the basic principles and values and to the Organization's acquis regarding the defence of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, as confirmed at the Summit of the Heads of State Members of the Council of Europe in Reykjavík, in May 2023. She also noted that the participation of Cyprus in all institutions and more generally in the entire range of activities of the Organization, has yielded tangible results in terms of strengthening democratic institutions, as well as added value to the lives of Cypriot citizens.
