Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis reassured that the government's ultimate goal is none other than Cyprus reunification, on the basis of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations, the European acquis and EU's principles. Addressing an event Friday night on the anniversary of the 50 years from the coup d'état and the Turkish invasion of the island, the Spokesperson noted that the government is working with all its strength in order to achieve a solution for an independent and truly sovereign state without any guarantees and the Turkish occupying forces. He said that there is commitment on behalf of the government adding that the solution will lead to a peaceful, stable and prosperous country in the region. He said that in July each year there is sadness and bitterness among the people because we remember the tragic days of the Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation which remains an unhealed wound. Letymbiotis said that we will keep on fighting unwaveringly to end the occupation and unite our homeland. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
