Hundreds of people had the opportunity to enjoy on Friday evening the live broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, on a giant screen set up in the seaside park of the Limassol embankment, on Friday night. The event was organised by the French Embassy, the French Institute of Cyprus and the Alliance Française de Limassol cultural club, with the support of the Municipality of Limassol. Present were, among others, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, French Ambassador to Cyprus, Salina Grenet-Catalano as well as Ambassadors of other countries. In her brief greeting, Grenet-Catalano expressed her joy at the organisation of the event 'in the cosmopolitan city of Limassol', which perfectly reflects the spirit of the Olympic Games, as she noted. She said that the Olympic Games, which are returning to Paris after 100 years, will be revolutionary, since their environmental footprint is reduced by 50% compared to previous events, but also because, for the first time in their hi story, there is equal participation of men and women. Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis said that the ancient tradition of the Olympic Games, which started in Greece, was being reborn in Paris, the city of light and culture, to highlight the values of peace, friendship, of inclusiveness and cooperation. Values which, as we all know, he said, are more necessary today than ever. He said that the 'welcoming and multicultural' Limassol could not help but celebrate this event, noting that the choice of venue was not accidental, since it hosts dozens of sports events each year. Armeftis also wished every success to the athletes from Cyprus and noted that they already deserve congratulations for their hard work and dedication in fulfilling their goals.
