A meeting was held on Tuesday at the Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus, during which information was provided about the functioning of the prosecution system in Cyprus, and it was decided to further strengthen relations and exchange visits at various levels. The meeting included the heads of the Legal Service, George Savvides and Savvas Angelides, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, and the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) of the People's Republic of China, Chen Guoqing, who was accompanied by a delegation of Chinese officials. Also present at the meeting were two General Prosecutors from regions of China and the Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, Liu Yantao. According to a press release from the Legal Service, 'the meeting is part of the Chinese delegation's interest in exchanging information on the functioning of the prosecution system in Cyprus." In this context, the press release added, the Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus, while welcoming the delegation to Cyprus and thanking them for the cooperation, provided a detailed explanation of the role, powers, and responsibilities of the Attorney General as outlined in the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus. 'Mr. Savvides also addressed issues related to state and private criminal prosecutions, as well as other matters of criminal law,' the statement noted. Furthermore, "an extensive discussion took place between the two delegations on specialised criminal law issues, such as cybercrime, particularly child pornography, electronic fraud, and measures to protect citizens from the spread of fake news on the internet." From his side, the Chinese official, expressing his appreciation for the meeting and emphasizing the traditionally very close relations between Cyprus and China, analyzed the role of the Chinese Prosecutor's Office which employs 220,000 people, 70,000 of whom are prosecutors. He also thanked the Legal Service of the Republic and the Ministry of Justice and Public Order fo r the judicial cooperation that Cyprus and China have developed, based on bilateral agreements signed between the two countries on asset freezing and confiscation from individuals involved in criminal activities. According to the press release, Chen extended the respect of the General Prosecutor of the People's Republic of China to the heads of the Legal Service and extended an official invitation to the leadership of the Legal Service and the Minister of Justice and Public Order to visit the office of China's Prosecutor General in 2025.
