An exhibition entitled "Cyprus 1974, Memory is the Only Homeland of People" is being jointly presented by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, to mark the 50th anniversary of the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 1974. The exhibition, which will run until December 13, 2024, will be inaugurated by the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art - SPEL in Nicosia. It will be followed by the anti-occupation event "50 Words of Apology," inspired by Andreas Paraschos. A House of Representatives press release said the exhibition chronicles recent Cypriot history and recalls the collective and personal memory of those who experienced the tragic events and those who still live in their painful aftermath. The rich archival, testimonial, and other materials, gathered through thorough research and provided by n umerous public and private institutions and organizations, as well as individuals, include state documents, objects and relics, photographs of people and moments, images of Cypriot landscapes, books and publications, historical, literary, and musical narratives, artworks, cinematic and theatrical representations, as well as human testimonial accounts. Together, they form a large multi-thematic exhibition, the press release said. The aim, it added, is to capture the trauma and wonder of Cyprus over the past half-century, the tragedy, but also the resilience and determination of the Cypriot people to recover and progress, to engage with young people who did not live through the events but need to know, and to become a meeting place for the painful past with the still difficult present, as well as a space for dialogue, reflection, and the search for a better future for all Cypriots in a united and free homeland. The exhibition hours are Tuesday-Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday: 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m . In Athens, the exhibition will be inaugurated on Monday, September 30, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at the exhibition space of the Former Public Tobacco Factory. Source: Cyprus News Agency
