The immigration issue was discussed by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, in their meeting, which took place on Thursday in New York and which was requested by the President of the Republic. The Presidency of the Republic said in a press release that the subject of the meeting was the developments in the region and the effective handling of migration flows from Syria, in light of the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus together with other EU member states, so that the gradual re-evaluation of the said EU policy, always in cooperation with the High Commissioner for Refugees and in the context of international law, can be discussed. "During the meeting, President Christodoulides referred to the increased flows of refugees that the Republic of Cyprus accepts, as well as the flows of irregular migrants through the occupied territories," it added. He also expressed the support of the Republic of Cyprus to the efforts of the UN in Syria, while he informed about the readiness of Cyprus to manage the situation in case of evacuation of third country nationals from the region, mainly from Lebanon, through Cyprus, the press release concluded. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
