Cyprus seeks to expand its diplomatic footprint, FM says

Cyprus seeks to expand its diplomatic footprint through contacts with countries with which communication is not frequent, and with the effort always focused on the creation of common elements, which will create a mutually beneficial situation, Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, said on Wednesday, in New York. Kombos said that he continues his contacts during the UN General Assembly high-level week in New York, which are based on three main parameters, namely informing his interlocutors about the Cyprus issue, promoting the candidacy of the Republic of Cyprus for the UN Human Rights Council, and expanding Nicosia's diplomatic footprint, through contacts with countries with which communication is not frequent 'and with the effort always focused on creating common elements that will create a mutually beneficial situation'. He added that both tripartite meetings scheduled while in New York were important. The first one was between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt, while on Thursday, the tripartite between Cyprus, Greece and Jordan is to take place. 'We continue the contacts in the context of the role we play in the region and in the context of the promotion of our candidacy for the Human Rights Council', Kombos said, noting that, for the latter, elections are scheduled for October 9. 'We hope for a good result, which will allow us, for the first time, to participate as an elected member of the Human Rights Council, which is of particular importance and affects the global situation regarding the crucial for us issue of human rights', he said. The Minister noted that he would continue his contacts in the coming days. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
