Cyprus becomes full member of International Organisation of la Francophonie

Cyprus is now a full member of the International Organisation of la Francophonie (OIF). The decision was taken at the 19th OIF Summit, which took place in Villers-Cotterêts, France, on 4-5 October 2024. According to a press release by the Foreign Ministry, Cyprus has been an associate member of the OIF since September 2006, following a decision taken at the 11th Summit of the Organisation in Bucharest. As a full member, Cyprus will participate more actively and on a practical level in promoting the objectives of Francophonie. "Our country now has the possibility of voting in the decisions of the Organisation, as well as the right to host a Summit or other major events. With this new status, Cyprus can claim a position within the OIF, while having a role and a voice in decisions concerning the policies and governance of the Organisation", the press release states. With full membership, Cyprus will also gain access to a large network of countries operating within the common framework of Francophonie. Common objectives are to further promote the French language, cultural and linguistic diversity, and the development of dialogue between nations in a spirit of multilateral cooperation and solidarity. "The decision of the OIF member states to grant full membership to Cyprus is a sign of the confidence of the extended family of Francophonie in our country, as well as recognition of Cyprus' commitment to the principles and values of Francophonie and the promotion of the French language in general", the press release concludes.
