BRUSSELS: The international community and the European Union must not undermine the International Criminal Court (ICC), declared the EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell. This statement comes in the wake of the ICC's recent issuance of arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. According to Anadolu Agency, Borrell, speaking before a meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in Brussels, emphasized the necessity of supporting the ICC as vital for global justice and accountability. He warned that without full European support, the ICC's efficacy would be compromised. Borrell stressed that ICC decisions should not be viewed as political maneuvers. Borrell further articulated concerns about internal challenges within Israeli society, claiming that extremism and violence were undermining the nation's democratic foundations. He described the situati on in Gaza and the West Bank as transformative for Israel, warning of broader regional instability if peace in the Middle East remains elusive. Belgium's Foreign Minister, Hadja Lahbib, echoed these sentiments, advocating for a diplomatic and political resolution in the Middle East. She called for moving beyond partisan interests to serve the general interests of the region. Lahbib expressed hope that the cease-fire in Lebanon could serve as a model for peace in Gaza, which continues to suffer from a prolonged Israeli offensive resulting in significant casualties and humanitarian crises. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has sparked widespread international outcry, with growing accusations of genocide against Israel by various officials and institutions.
