Antarctica: China's first foreign atmospheric background station has commenced operations in Antarctica, as reported by state-run media on Monday. The station, which began functioning on Sunday, aims to conduct continuous and long-term observations of changes in the concentration of atmospheric components in the Antarctic region. According to Anadolu Agency, the China Meteorological Administration stated that the station will provide a "faithful presentation of the average state of the atmospheric composition and related characteristics in the region." The Antarctic region is noted as a critical area for global atmospheric environment observation. The station marks a significant step for Beijing, which has established a comprehensive observing system comprising seven categories of meteorological elements, including ozone and aerosol. China currently operates nine atmospheric background stations within its own borders.
