Vietnam Court Upholds Death Sentence for Tycoon Truong My Lan Over $12 Billion Fraud.

Ho Chi Minh City: A Vietnamese court on Tuesday rejected an appeal from property tycoon Truong My Lan and upheld her death sentence connected to a $12 billion bank fraud, local media reported. The appeal court in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed the death sentence, stating there were no valid reasons to reduce her sentence, as reported by the online newspaper VnExpress. According to Anadolu Agency, the judges emphasized that Lan's actions had resulted in severe consequences, with no mitigating circumstances warranting a reduction in her sentences for embezzlement and bribery. The court's ruling highlighted that the law permits a death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment if the guilty party compensates three-fourths of the losses they caused. Lan, a notable figure in Vietnam's property sector, was initially sentenced to death in October for her involvement in the country's largest financial fraud case. Alongside her accomplices, Lan was found guilty of embezzling from Saigon Commercial Bank, leading to bi llions of dollars in losses over a period of ten years.
