Istanbul: The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) officially requested Thursday that Gavriel Kanichowsky and his club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, be referred to UEFA for disciplinary review. The request follows an incident during a UEFA Europa League match where Kanichowsky's goal celebration included a military salute, which the TFF claims was politically charged. According to Anadolu Agency, the TFF issued a statement condemning the Israeli player's actions during the match against Besiktas, stating that the salute was "political, thoughtless, and intended to convey a message." In response, the TFF has called on UEFA's Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Board to investigate the matter further, considering potential disciplinary measures against Kanichowsky and Maccabi Tel Aviv. The match in question took place in Hungary, where Maccabi Tel Aviv secured a 3-1 victory over Besiktas. Kanichowsky, aged 27, scored the opening goal in the 23rd minute, followed by the controversial celebration. The incident has garnered int ernational attention, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli military's actions. In recent years, Israeli military operations in the West Bank have intensified, particularly after the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip beginning on October 7, 2023.
