Trkiye Mediates Diplomatic Breakthrough Between Somalia and Ethiopia

ANKARA: Trkiye has played a pivotal role in mediating a longstanding conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia, showcasing its influence as a regional actor, according to an Indian media report. The report highlights that Trkiye has been instrumental in facilitating dialogue and fostering cooperation between the two Horn of Africa nations. According to Anadolu Agency, the recent peace talks held in Ankara have been a significant step towards resolving the dispute. Trkiye hosted a meeting between Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, where the three leaders announced a pact aimed at fostering a new beginning based on peace and cooperation. In a joint news conference, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the progress made, stating, "We have taken the first step toward a new beginning based on peace, cooperation between Somalia, Ethiopia." The Ankara Declaration, as announced by Trkiye's Communications Directorate, affirmed the commitment of Somalia and Ethiopia to respect each other's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity. The leaders agreed to move past differences and contentious issues, aiming to work cooperatively for shared prosperity. The Indian media report further noted that Trkiye has been actively involved in Somalia for years, providing development assistance, humanitarian aid, and military training. This involvement has expanded Turkey's influence in the region, particularly in crucial shipping lanes. Ankara's engagement has historically played a crucial role as a mediator in previous negotiations between the countries. The report also addressed the historical context of the tensions, tracing back to Eritrea's independence from Ethiopia in 1991, which resulted in Ethiopia losing direct access to the Red Sea and its ports. The recent conflict was exacerbated by Ethiopia's agreement with Somaliland to use the Red Sea port of Berbera. Trkiye's ongoing efforts aim to alleviate these tensions and stabilize the region.
