URUMQI: China has successfully completed the construction of the world's longest tunnel, measuring 22.1 kilometers (13.7 miles), in the western province of Xinjiang. The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, part of the Urumqi-Yuli expressway, is expected to significantly reduce travel time across the autonomous region, cutting it down to just 20 minutes.
According to Anadolu Agency, construction of the tunnel commenced in 2020 and concluded nearly one and a half years ahead of schedule. The tunnel traverses the Tianshan mountains, connecting the northern and southern parts of Xinjiang. This development is anticipated to alleviate issues caused by the previously treacherous mountain roads, which were prone to freezing during winter, often leaving trucks carrying coal, agricultural produce, and livestock stranded.
Qadir Abliz, a truck driver, shared with Xinhua News that the new tunnel will provide a reliable passage through the mountains, improving the efficiency and safety of transporting goods across the region. The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is a pivotal component of the broader infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic development in Xinjiang. The tunnel is expected to become operational next year, marking a significant milestone in China's ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure.
