South Korean Anti-Corruption Agency Pressures Police to Arrest Impeached President

Seoul: South Korea's anti-corruption agency has requested police action to execute an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his attempted imposition of martial law. This request comes as both parties confirmed the development on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) submitted their official request late Sunday, ahead of the warrant's expiration. A police official revealed to Yonhap news agency that the CIO had sent a request for cooperation without prior discussion, prompting an internal legal review by the police.

Previously, the CIO had paused the warrant's execution on Friday during a standoff with presidential security at Yoon's residence. The agency has been working alongside the police and the Defense Ministry's investigation unit in a joint investigation into Yoon's brief martial law declaration on December 3.

As the warrant neared its expiration at midnight local time, the CIO faced a decision to either attempt Yoon's detention again, seek an extension, or explore other options. Reports indicated dissatisfaction within the police, who felt the CIO was attempting to deflect responsibility after Friday's inactive approach.

Yoon's legal representatives have countered the warrant, claiming it to be illegal and invalid, asserting that the CIO lacks the authority to investigate insurrection charges related to his martial law declaration.
