Baku: Azerbaijan reported on Monday that Armenian forces targeted its military positions in the Lachin region overnight. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stated that its forces, stationed near the villages of Zabukh and Jaghazur, came under fire from Armenian forces late Sunday between 10 p.m. and 10:10 p.m. local time (1800-1810GMT).
According to Anadolu Agency, the ministry emphasized that Armenian units have attacked Azerbaijani positions multiple times recently, with each incident being documented. A subsequent statement on Monday reported another firing incident by Armenian forces at Azerbaijani positions near Zabukh around 2:10 p.m. local time (1210GMT).
Armenia's Defense Ministry, however, refuted these claims, asserting that they do not "correspond to reality." These incidents mark the first reports of their kind from Baku since September 2024.
The tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia trace back to 1991, with the Armenian military's occupation of Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, including Lachin. Azerbaijan reclaimed most of the territory during a 44-day conflict in the fall of 2020, which concluded with a Russian-brokered peace agreement. This agreement facilitated the initiation of normalization talks and border demarcation.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan asserted full control over Karabakh following an "anti-terrorist operation," leading to the surrender of separatist forces in the area.
