New York: Apple and Samsung's smartphone sales experienced a decline of 4.1% and 2.7% respectively in the last quarter of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to Anadolu Agency, market research company International Data Corporation (IDC) reported these figures, highlighting a contrast with the overall global smartphone market, which saw an increase of 2.4%, reaching 331.7 million units in the last quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
Throughout 2024, global smartphone sales grew for the sixth consecutive quarter, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units, marking a 6.4% year-on-year increase. Despite this growth, Apple and Samsung, although maintaining their positions as the top two players in the smartphone market for both the fourth quarter and the entire year of 2024, faced a reduction in yearly sales and market share due to the rising competition from Chinese suppliers.
IDC data indicates that Apple retained its leading position with a market share of 23.2% in the last quarter of the previous year. Samsung followed in second place with a market share of 15.6%, while Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi secured the third spot with 12.9%. Chinese companies Transsion and Vivo shared the fourth position, each holding an 8.2% market share.
