Strasbourg: The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has approved a motion urging an immediate resolution to the humanitarian crisis impacting Palestinian children, women, and hostages in the Gaza Strip. The motion, which was passed with 90 votes in favor, 18 against, and 14 abstentions, underscores the severity of the situation caused by Israel's actions in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, the motion highlights the significant loss of life, including fatalities among health and humanitarian workers, resulting from Israeli attacks on Gaza over the past year. It calls for the protection of civilians and the provision of essential supplies by advocating for the opening of multiple access routes to facilitate humanitarian aid.

The motion also emphasizes the importance of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees continuing its operations in the area, along with the release of prisoners. During the assembly discussions, Irish delegate Fiona O'Loughlin highlighted the dire situation, noting that almost every day, 10 children lose limbs and 20,000 Gazan children are now orphans. She emphasized that over 96% of women and children in Gaza are unable to meet their basic food needs, urging for increased humanitarian aid.

Portuguese delegate Edite Estrela stressed the necessity of peace for Palestinians to rebuild their lives and homes, expressing support for the rights of Palestinian women and children. Estrela condemned the ongoing violence and the significant civilian casualties resulting from continuous bombing and attacks.

The crisis has seen more than 47,000 people, mostly women and children, killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, following attacks by the Palestinian group Hamas. The relentless bombardment has led to widespread displacement, food shortages, and extensive destruction in the region. A ceasefire has been in effect since January 19.
