Cairo: The first shipment of mobile homes has departed from Egypt towards the Gaza Strip as part of a ceasefire agreement with Israel, Egyptian media reported. This significant development occurred on Thursday, marking a crucial step in the effort to provide shelter for displaced Palestinians in the war-torn region.
According to Anadolu Agency, five trucks carrying a total of 15 mobile homes, along with a bulldozer, successfully crossed the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing. They proceeded towards the Kerem Shalom (Karam Abu Salem) terminal, poised to enter Gaza. Egyptian television channel Al-Qahera News captured footage of the trucks carrying the mobile homes as they made their way from the Rafah border crossing to the Kerem Shalom terminal.
While the Egyptian media reported the movement of these mobile homes, there has been no immediate confirmation from Palestinian authorities in Gaza. The delivery of mobile homes has been a contentious issue, with Israel initially refusing to allow them into Gaza under the ceasefire deal. This resistance persisted despite the urgent need for shelter among displaced Palestinians amid the cold weather. Eventually, mediators intervened to enforce the agreement, facilitating the shipment.
The ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement took effect last month, temporarily halting Israel's military actions in Gaza. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 48,300 Palestinians and extensive damage to the enclave. Additionally, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Furthermore, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.
