China Reaffirms Climate Cooperation, Criticizes US Trade and Geopolitical Strategies

Beijing: China reiterated its commitment to international climate cooperation while strongly opposing US trade policies. Speaking at a press briefing Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted China's leadership in recently hosting the plenary session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the first time.

According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting adopted the outline of the IPCC's seventh assessment report with the strong support and promotion of China, clarifying the key directions of climate change scientific assessment. Lin Jian emphasized China's dedication to building a fair, reasonable, cooperative, and win-win global climate governance system, aiding developing countries in capacity and technology enhancement to combat climate change.

On trade relations, Lin criticized US threats to impose additional tariffs on Chinese exports, attributing them to the fentanyl issue. He stated that China firmly opposes these threats and will take necessary measures to protect its legitimate interests. Lin stressed that there are no winners in trade and tariff wars, expressing China's willingness to address concerns through dialogue based on equality and mutual respect.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Lin asserted China's commitment to playing a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis, advocating for a peaceful settlement. He encouraged all parties to find a sustainable and lasting solution that considers mutual concerns.

On Taiwan, Lin reiterated that there is only one China, with Taiwan being an inalienable part of it. He accused the US of distorting the 'one-China principle' and criticized American geopolitical strategies. Lin urged Washington to abandon its 'hegemonic logic,' which treats other countries as pawns, while reaffirming China's commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation in China-US relations. He also vowed to protect China's national sovereignty.
