Damascus: The Syrian Defense Ministry announced the conclusion of its military operations against remnants of the former Bashar Assad regime in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus. The operation successfully neutralized security cells in key towns, thereby securing the area and paving the way for stability and normalcy.

According to Anadolu Agency, the ministry spokesperson, Hassan Abdul Ghani, stated that Syrian forces managed to absorb and repel attacks from regime remnants, securing strategic locations and main roads previously used to target civilians. Public institutions are now poised to resume operations and provide essential services.

The spokesperson emphasized the commitment of Syrian security agencies to intensify efforts to maintain stability and protect residents. The Defense Ministry is also developing plans to combat any future threats from regime remnants and prevent their reorganization.

Abdul Ghani highlighted the formation of an investigative committee to uncover the circumstances of recent events and ensure justice for those affected. The announcement follows recent intense assaults by Assad loyalists in Latakia and Tartus, which were the most severe since the regime's collapse.

In the wake of the Assad regime's collapse in December, new Syrian authorities initiated a status settlement for former regime members, contingent on disarmament and lack of involvement in bloodshed. While many accepted, some armed groups in the coastal region, where high-ranking officers were stationed, refused and fled to mountainous areas, causing tensions and sporadic attacks.

The Assad regime ended when Bashar Assad fled to Russia on Dec. 8, 2024, marking the conclusion of the Baath Party's long-standing rule. Ahmed al-Sharaa, a key figure in ousting Assad, was appointed president for a transitional period on Jan. 29.
