Gaza: Thousands of Israelis gathered in the streets of Jerusalem on Wednesday to express their discontent with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet domestic security service and to restart military operations in the Gaza Strip. Demonstrators voiced their concerns over the potential consequences of these decisions on national security and regional stability.
According to Anadolu Agency, the protesters obstructed Route 1, the primary entryway into Jerusalem, as they made their way to Netanyahu's residence. The protest was marked by strong messages from leaders like Shikma Bressler, who emphasized the urgency of the situation. "It's time to end this madness before we don't have anyone to save, before we don't have a country left," Bressler declared to the gathered crowd.
Netanyahu's announcement over the weekend to relieve Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar of his duties was attributed to what he described as "a lack of trust." This move has further strained the relationship between the Prime Minister and the Shin Bet, especially in light of the agency's investigation into the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas. Netanyahu has dismissed the findings of this investigation, claiming they left significant questions unanswered.
Further escalating tensions, Netanyahu's government resumed airstrikes on Gaza on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of over 400 Palestinians and disrupting a previously established ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement. Critics argue that this escalation jeopardizes the possibility of securing the release of approximately 59 Israelis currently held captive by Hamas in Gaza.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid took to social media platform X to rally support against the government's actions. "This government will not stop at a red line," Lapid stated, advocating for a unified response from the Israeli people. "I call on all of you. This is our moment, this is our future, this is our country - to take to the streets."
The conflict in Gaza has led to the deaths of nearly 50,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, and has left over 112,000 others injured since October 2023. The international community has taken note, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice due to its military actions in the enclave.
