Brussels: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that multilateralism is not dead, despite global challenges and the isolationist approach of US President Donald Trump. Guterres made these remarks while at the EU Council Summit, underscoring the continued importance of global cooperation.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres emphasized that multilateralism remains crucial, illustrated by his presence alongside the European Union. He responded to concerns about Trump's impact on multilateralism, highlighting the US withdrawal from key UN bodies such as the World Health Organization and the Paris Agreement as evidence of a shift from collective problem-solving.

Guterres addressed various global issues during his speech, including the situation in Ukraine. He called for a ceasefire that would lead to a 'just peace,' stressing the importance of saving lives and achieving a sustainable resolution. In regard to the Gaza Strip, he expressed sorrow over the ongoing violence, urging an immediate ceasefire and improved humanitarian access.

The Secretary-General reiterated his call for humanitarian aid to reach all affected areas in Gaza and emphasized the necessity of an unconditional release of hostages. He advocated for a two-state solution as the pathway to peace in the Middle East, supporting the coexistence of a Palestinian and an Israeli state.

Guterres also conveyed his gratitude to the EU for its support in implementing the Pact of the Future, a UN initiative aimed at fostering international cooperation for a more equitable and sustainable world. European Council President Antonio Costa echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need to strengthen the multilateral system, particularly the United Nations.

Costa noted the importance of addressing global challenges such as peace, climate change, and inequality. He stressed the significance of maintaining peace efforts in regions like Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan, underlining the role of multilateralism in tackling these issues.
