New York: Trkiye's ambassador to the UN on Monday underscored the need for adaptability in UN peacekeeping operations to address evolving global challenges. Ahmet Yildiz paid tribute to fallen peacekeepers at a UN Security Council meeting, saying: "Their sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve under the UN flag." Highlighting Trkiye's longstanding contributions to peacekeeping efforts, he said: "Now it is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that peacekeeping remains relevant and responsive to the evolving challenges to global peace and security."
According to Anadolu Agency, Yildiz stressed the necessity of moving beyond the status quo in peacekeeping practices, citing the profound transformations in the international landscape and the deployment of peacekeeping missions in multi-dimensional, high-risk environments. He emphasized the role of political commitment in fulfilling peacekeeping mandates, stating that UN peacekeeping operations must have genuine political backing to realize their objectives.
Yildiz advocated for the 'primacy of politics' as a guiding principle for UN peacekeeping, underscoring the importance of mediation in conflict resolution. He suggested that mediation should have a central role in not only bringing conflicts to peaceful ends but also in addressing their root causes. He expressed concern over declining resources for development and humanitarian efforts, warning against losing the progress achieved thus far.
Trkiye's ambassador reiterated the country's readiness to engage constructively, share experiences, and support initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness, adaptability, and legitimacy of UN peacekeeping.
