Ankara: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday extended Eid al-Fitr greetings with "a heavy heart," noting millions of Muslims would mark the holiday under war and displacement rather than traditional family gatherings.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres expressed his best wishes for Eid al-Fitr to all Muslims worldwide in a video statement he shared on X. He highlighted the somber reality that many Muslims would be unable to partake in traditional Eid celebrations with their families due to ongoing conflicts and displacement.

The UN chief underscored the core values of Eid al-Fitr, such as "solidarity and compassion," and expressed hope that these principles might help bridge divides within affected communities. His message resonated particularly with Palestinians in Gaza, Rohingya refugees, and other Muslim populations facing violence and humanitarian challenges.

Eid al-Fitr signifies the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a period characterized by dawn-to-dusk fasting. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated with prayers, feasts, and acts of charity, but ongoing crises have cast a somber shadow over the festivities for many.
