Antalya: Somali Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur emphasized the strength of Trkiye-Somalia relations and the Antalya Diplomacy Forum's (ADF) impact in reshaping diplomacy during the forum's fourth edition at the NEST Congress Center. He stated that the event in the coastal Belek district of Antalya has become an essential platform in a fractured world, encouraging inclusive and forward-thinking multilateralism under Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's leadership.
According to Anadolu Agency, Nur highlighted the urgency of addressing global challenges such as conflict, climate change, food insecurity, and inequality, which transcend borders and require collective action. He noted Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's presence at the forum as a testament to Somalia's commitment to its objectives and the strength of Somali-Turkish relations based on shared values, mutual trust, and a dedication to building resilient and peaceful societies.
Nur emphasized that this year's theme, "Rebuilding Diplomacy in a Fractured World," mirrors Somalia's own experiences. He explained that the country has learned that lasting peace arises from dialogue, trust, and inclusive governance rather than force, and that Somalia appreciates the power of diplomacy through its supportive partnerships with nations like Trkiye.
Describing the ADF as more than a diplomatic meeting, Nur highlighted its inclusion of diverse groups such as youth, academics, civil society, and business leaders. He expressed Somalia's readiness to contribute its experiences to help shape a fairer international system.
Nur praised the enduring and exemplary partnership between Trkiye and Somalia, rooted in shared history and guided by a vision of peace and regional leadership. He cited President Erdogan's 2011 visit to Mogadishu as pivotal in transforming the relationship from humanitarian support to a comprehensive partnership focused on state-building, security, economic resilience, and infrastructure.
The Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement signed on February 8 has elevated bilateral ties to a strategic level, covering areas like maritime security, counter-terrorism, and national defense. Nur also mentioned oil and hydrocarbon exploration deals as crucial steps in Somalia's pursuit of energy independence, with Trkiye as a strategic investor and reliable partner.
Nur described these agreements as more than economic initiatives, reflecting a vision for sustainable statehood. He highlighted Trkiye's support for Somalia's port infrastructure, maritime training, and institutional development, which are vital for transforming the country into a regional trade hub.
He further noted that maritime cooperation between Trkiye and Somalia dates back to the Ottoman period, signifying a deep-rooted connection. He emphasized Somalia's geostrategic position at the intersection of global trade routes, making its ports significant both nationally and internationally, and praised Trkiye's role in modernizing these vital gateways.
