Ankara: The EU on Tuesday expressed its support for Trkiye's diplomatic initiatives aimed at facilitating peace talks and establishing a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The EU emphasized the importance of respecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in these efforts.
According to Anadolu Agency, European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper addressed the media at a daily press briefing in Brussels, where she highlighted the importance of diplomatic endeavors in the pursuit of peace. Hipper made these comments in response to inquiries regarding Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's ongoing visit to Moscow.
In a related development, Russia announced its intention to send Ukraine a draft of a peace memorandum once it is ready, expressing hope that Kyiv is engaging in similar preparations.
Hipper reiterated the EU's position that Ukraine should have the autonomy to determine its next steps. "Ukraine's independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty must be respected. It is also for Ukraine to decide in terms of the next steps and actual decisions," she stated.
Providing further context, Hipper mentioned that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has been prepared to agree to a ceasefire for over two months. She also referenced a joint statement by the EU's 27 leaders, which calls for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire.
"In this regard, on our side, we are in close coordination, and of course, we're supporting Ukraine throughout," she added, underscoring the EU's commitment to Ukraine.
Hipper also stressed that in addition to diplomatic efforts, the EU is working on enhancing sanctions against Russia to maintain pressure on Moscow.
