Istanbul: Peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv held in Istanbul on May 16 have introduced a 'new dimension' in the quest for a diplomatic resolution, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated during his visit to Ukraine.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan made these remarks at a joint news conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, where he highlighted the potential for concrete outcomes from the discussions in Istanbul. He expressed Turkey's commitment to sustaining the momentum gained from these talks and suggested the possibility of a high-level meeting involving leaders such as Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy, potentially hosted by President Erdogan.
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism regarding imminent agreements on ending the conflict in Gaza and addressing Iran's nuclear program. Trump conveyed his thoughts to reporters in the Oval Office, noting the near completion of a ceasefire in Gaza and the potential for a deal with Iran. He highlighted the willingness of Iran to negotiate to avoid escalations.
Meanwhile, the UN humanitarian office has described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as dire, with aid deliveries being severely restricted. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, explained that food supplies into Gaza are minimal, with operational bottlenecks hindering distribution. Despite the approval of nearly 900 trucks for entry, only a fraction has reached those in need.
