Paris: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza, labeling them as ‘genocide,’ during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. He called for a renewed international effort to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing the need for a stronger global response to conflicts.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lula criticized the disparity in the international community’s reaction to civilian casualties, highlighting the need for consistent solidarity. He pointed out the killing of two Palestinian children in contrast to the global mourning for two Israeli casualties, urging a more even-handed approach. Additionally, Lula advocated for the reform of the UN Security Council, describing its current structure as “politically weak” and urging for representation from Africa and South America, as well as nations like Germany, Japan, and India.

During the conference, Macron defended the Western stance on both the Ukraine conflict and the situation in Gaza. He outlined France’s collaborative efforts with international partners to secure a ceasefire and improve humanitarian access in the region. Macron also mentioned an upcoming conference in Saudi Arabia on June 18, aimed at advancing Palestinian statehood and enhancing regional security.

On the Ukraine conflict, Lula reiterated Brazil’s condemnation of Russia’s territorial occupation but stressed the importance of ending the war through negotiations. He defended Brazil’s diplomatic engagements with Russia and China, emphasizing dialogue as a pathway to peace. Macron, meanwhile, held Russia solely responsible for the war in Ukraine, dismissing any notion of equal responsibility between the conflicting parties. He noted President Putin’s rejection of ceasefire proposals, despite Ukraine’s openness to diplomacy, highlighting the challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution.
